The definition of DNA, and the versatility of DNA tests.

Rate this Entry
DNA is the hereditary material in all living organisms that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of an organism. DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic acid. It is a long polymer of ribonucleic acids and it contains genetic information which is replicated, transcribed, translated into proteins, and expressed as genes. DNA is made up of two strands that are twisted together to form a double helix shape. DNA can be found in almost every cell of an organism's body. It has been estimated that there are about 10^37 base pairs in human DNA, which means there are about 10 billion trillion base pairs on Earth right now!
The DNA test of a suspect is one of the most important tasks in criminal investigations. The process involves extracting DNA from a suspect, using PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to amplify the DNA, and then sequencing the DNA. This is not an easy task and requires many steps, which can take up to two weeks or more. With genetic testing becoming more popular, law enforcement agencies need to stay on top of developments in this field. To stay ahead of the game and ensure success when conducting a search warrant for a DNA sample, investigators should consider using new technologies such as rapid-DNA-testing kits.
With the advancement of technology, DNA testing has become a popular way to know more about your genetic makeup. It helps you understand what health conditions you are prone to and how you can take action to prevent them.
The pros of DNA testing include:
- It is 100% accurate since it doesn't rely on any kind of external factors;
- It provides an insight into your health and genetic history;
- You can find out if there is a family member with the same genetic traits as you.
